Two pencil drawings of magpies by Susannah Weiland, photographed on a wooden studio desk alongside a Faber-Castell 9000 graphite pencil. One drawing shows a magpie standing, the other depicts a magpie in full flight with wings and tail fanned wide. An insight into the artist's process and the detail achievable through graphite pencil drawing.

Commission a Hand Embroidered Artwork

Each piece Susannah creates is made entirely by hand — drawn, stitched and finished in her studio. If you are looking for an original work that is entirely your own, a commission offers the opportunity to work closely with the artist from the very beginning of a design.

Commissions are open to private collectors, interior designers and corporate clients across the UK and internationally. Whether you have a clear vision or simply a feeling you’d like to explore, Susannah will guide you through the process from initial brief to finished piece.

What Can Be Commissioned

Susannah works in two distinct styles, both available as bespoke hand embroidered commissions:

–  Figurative hand embroidery — detailed studies of birds and wildlife, combining tonal pencil drawing with fine hand stitching on fabric or paper

–  Abstract embroidered works — richly textured pieces stitched directly into leather, translating observed moments of light, sky and landscape into thread and mark

–  Customised designs from existing collections — colour, scale and layout adapted to suit your space or brief

–  Interior textiles — embroidered and beaded fabric for upholstery, cushions or decorative use

–  Wallcovering customisation — designs scaled to order, with embroidered templates that can be applied to wallpaper after hanging for a couture finish

The Commission Process

Every commission begins with a conversation. Once Susannah understands your brief — the subject, the space it will live in, the mood you want to create — she will develop initial sketches and agree a direction before any stitching begins.

A 50% deposit is required to begin work, with the balance due on completion prior to delivery. Timescales vary depending on the complexity and scale of the piece; Susannah will provide a realistic timeline at the outset and keep you informed at every stage.

Why Commission a Hand Embroidered Work?

Hand embroidery is one of the most time-intensive of all the textile arts. A single piece can take weeks or months to complete, stitch by stitch. The result is an artwork with a visible record of that time and attention — something no print or reproduction can replicate. For collectors of contemporary textile art, a commissioned hand embroidered work is both a unique object and a lasting investment.

Susannah’s work has been recognised with a QEST Scholarship, exhibited at the Royal Academy, and selected for Homo Faber — giving collectors confidence in both the quality of the work and its standing within the field of contemporary British craft.
